Waste Not Want Not Wednesday #45

Got a great gluten free recipe, some frugal, eco-friendly tips or a healthy living article? Well come join the party!

The Waste Not Want Not Wednesday link-up party is inspired by World Food Day (Oct. 16), and recent articles such as this one that show between 40-51% of food in Canada and America ends up in the garbage.  Over-consumption, lack of knowledge, low cost and over purchasing are common causes of food waste in North America.  This unsustainable over-consumption extends to so many aspects of our lives.

So perhaps if we all share our tips for consuming a little less stuff in general, cooking more responsibly and frugally, and living eco-friendly, we can each take a small part in making our world a little more sustainable.

And besides, who couldn't save a little bit of $$$ anyway?

Phew, we've finally hit a patch of cooler weather and I'm ready to share recipes from last week that require firing up the oven to bake something tasty! Here are some features from last week's party:

Congrats and feel free to grab a badge from the right side bar!

What are the guidelines?

1) Please post a link on your blog post to back here, or copy and paste the code from the box under the Waste Not Want Not Button on the side bar into the HTML of your post so others can find the party, too. Posts without a link back will not be eligible for features, or being shared on my Pinterest board.

2) Visit some of the other posts here, comment on their scrumptiousness/brilliancy/helpfulness/frugality and let them know you found them here and hope for a similar visit.

3) Consider following the Poor and Gluten Free blog on Google+, Facebook, Pinterest or Twitter to stay up to date on happenings here (ok, not a rule, just a little shameless self-promotion).

4) Don't have a blog? No worries! Share your tips or recipes in the comments section.

* Share up to 3 posts per week.

Each week I'll post the entries on my Waste Not Want Not Pinterest board, and feature different posts on my  Facebook and Google+ pages so be sure to check in there, too to see if you've been featured!

* By linking up you give me permission to share your photos on my Pinterest and Facebook pages. I will always credit you and provide a link back to your blog and your photos won't be used for any other purpose. You will also receive future email notifications for the Waste Not Want Not party only, which you can easily opt out of at any time. Your email address will not be used for any other purpose.

And this week I'm sharing a post my Gluten Free, Locavore-ish Weekly Meal Plan as usual, and a recipe for Gluten Free Apple Dumplings {healthified} in honour of National Apple Dumpling Day.

And now it's your turn to share something!

  7. Hi Danielle, I have been struggling with this OAS for three years trying my hardest to figure out what to eat. Just when I think I have it figured out I learn something new. So, I think I am getting the hang of this, maybe a grip on my health. I will start trying to post more recipes with you. Did you have a bad time with the pollen this year? We were so rainy here that there was a few week break between the spring tree pollens and then the ragweed bloomed in JULY! I have been miserable, but I am getting the hang of it. The OAS seems to vary from pollen season to pollen season depending on how bad it is. Also do you have trouble with heart palpitations if you eat foods that cross react? I have that with quite a few foods. So I don't know if you can say it is severe OAS but it can really put me in a spot. Yours was one of the only websites that listed palpitations as a effect of this. Like clockwork if I eat bananas when the ragweed is out, I get heart palpitations.
Have you ever heard of taking anything to help this? Watching my diet seems to be the only way to get through it.

    1. Hi Sherry,

Re:Palpitations - What other symptoms do you have with it? i.e. shortness of breath, swelling, hives, dizziness?

I **strongly recommend** not eating anything raw that causes palpitations or any of the above symptoms. These are signs of anaphylaxis and palpitations is a fairly serious sign at that.

For anything raw that bothers you try cooking/boiling it for a considerable length of time to see if that helps. In most cases it destroys the proteins that activate your histamine response (except for wheat). I would also suggest getting tested to determine which foods are most reactive for you so you know what to watch out for.

I don't eat anything raw that causes any reaction at all (even if it's just an itch), it can disrupt my carefully balanced system ;) Bananas are particularly awful for me, 30 minutes later and I'm cramping up like I'm gonna die. Now I only eat the odd baked GF banana muffin (and the bananas have been microwaved before baking as well).

Please let me know if you have any other questions! I don't mean to freak you out, but it's important to be really careful when eating/testing foods you're allergic to.

    2. I have palpitations with cooked foods during the pollen season. Sugar of any kind even honey, bananas and coconut when the ragweed is blooming. I can eat sugar, bananas, and honey in the dead of winter when nothing is blooming. I have had these reactions many times and my M.D. tells me they won't hurt me not to worry about them.

    3. Glad you talked to your MD about it! I'd still avoid them if they give you palpitations, but proceed with caution :)
